PRESS RELEASE
Dutch Design Center becomes TOONKAMER
TOONKAMER OPENS THEIR DOORS FOR THE PRESS
On the 15th. of September the press is hearty welcome in the former Dutch Design Center. From that day on the 5000 m2, a treat for the designers eye, becomes a new name: TOONKAMER. A powerful new name which covers the load. “Except from the name nothing will change”, is the convinced meaning of TOONKAMER manager Daniëlle Pieket Weeserik. “All the year round we show all the new collections, have prototypes from Milan, bring as first these products to Holland and for that reason we are more renovating than most of the fairs.
New name
It’s there already since 1918: the PASTOE company close to the Vaartse Rijn in Utrecht. And still beautiful and longlasting Pastoe furniture is made by hand by craftsmen. At the time the present owner Harm Scheltens found out that during fairs venerable cabinets and tables were showed next to furniture with a far lower design and quality. From that moment on he came with the idea to collect only beautiful things. So 26 years ago he founded, in a part of his company, the Dutch Design Center. An enourmous window where established brands like Gelderland and Metaform have a spot next to smaller innovative brands like Ode aan De Vloer and De Ploeg can present themselves. Also because Dutch designers became “hot” the last few years, the name of DDC became misleading. Pieket Weeserik: “More and more visitors asked where they could find Droog Design and Marcel Wanders, who are not present here. Moreover you will also find jewels from abroad, like Verzelloni and Viccarbe. That’s why we have decided to change the name from Dutch Design Center into TOONKAMER.
Fascinating!?
TOONKAMER does it’s very best to show new collections over and over again, to organise events for all targetgroups (there is a special childeren’s afternoon, where they can design there own wallpaper etc. and consumersundays with lectures, workshops, presentations and interioradvice) and to rent out the booths to companies which will show and present themselves at a more inspiring spot than at their own accepted office. “You are also able to look and walk around in a relaxed atmosphere, without a salesperson at your neck”, concludes Pieket Weeserik “her” TOONKAMER. “Furthermore we have all information. From a brochure to a complete interior-advice. And we don’t have a fixed “routing” to follow. In a nutshell: who wants to go round in his own speed and wants to see what’s going about design, is at the right address on Rotsoord 3 in Utrecht.
